4 Things to Do to Build an Extraordinary Team Culture

  1. Clarify your Purpose

Your organization’s purpose lays the foundation for culture.

This involves a review or refinement of your vision, mission and values.

  • Vision: where you want to go and the impact you want to make
  • Mission: who you are and why you do what you do
  • Values: guiding principles that clarify the habits and behaviors

2. Create Common Language

Your language should be memorable and distinctive.

Attach your language to stories—this will make them more “sticky.”

Your values shouldn’t necessarily make sense to those outside the organization because of how distinctive they are to your team.

3. Connect the Dots

Help EVERY team member see how their work feeds the greater purpose.

Every function matters or you wouldn’t be paying for it.

Find ways to gather ALL staff to reconnect with your organization’s mission and vision.

Sharing stories that reinforce your values helps create mental models for the desired behaviors of your team.

4. Create Consistency

Make the move from culture being “caught” to culture being “taught.”

Consider physical reminders, rituals, recruiting and on boarding that teaches culture alignment, and performance plans and reviews that reinforce and evaluate your team against the stated values.

Remember and be encouraged: The HOW is the hardest part, but it’s also the most rewarding.
