My Prayer for Leaders

As we move into Easter weekend, rather than sharing leadership insights as we normally do each week, I wanted to instead share what I am praying for you in this season.

God, today I bring to you our leaders. Those who carry disproportionate responsibility to lead their teams and their organizations through the challenging and unknown days still ahead. While this load is never easy, in moments of crisis, the weight is greater than ever. Thank you for their willingness to go first, to carry a heavier load, to refuse to succumb to their own fears but to push through them because they realize the significance of their influence.

Give them courage today. Give them hope for the future. While they can’t see it all clearly, give them a glimpse of hope that guides the way for themselves and for others. Give them assurance of your presence–that while they may feel alone, you are with them. You comfort them. You uphold them.

Give them the grace they need to lead themselves well. To be self-aware and self-caring. Give them the foresight to understand that they need to find a sustainable pace for their own emotional, physical and spiritual health. In setting that pace, they are making it possible for those they lead to comfortably follow.

Assure them that they are not, nor do they need to be superheroes. They can be strong. In fact, we need them to bring their best gifts now more than ever. But those gifts do not need to be super-human…simply human. Give them confidence in the unique way they are designed and equipped to lead their team through this moment. Protect them from the things that often derail us–comparison, insecurity, fear, scarcity–and give them your gifts of love, joy, and peace.

God, I thank you for leaders. Thank you for giving them a heart to lead. Would you remind them of the incredibly sacred privilege of influence. Remind them of the simple, yet substantial importance of the meaning of that word – the power to change or affect others.

How they lead in this moment is changing and affecting the lives of those they lead. Give them wisdom. Give them grace. May their leadership be rooted in all you’ve created them to be – heart, soul, mind and strength – for your glory and the good of others.

We humbly accept the responsibility, remembering that it is a yoke – a burden – but with you the yoke is easy and the burden is light.

May we carry the burden of these days ahead with a lightness and joy that comes from knowing that our leadership is an overflow of you working in us and through us.
