Open Handed Planning

Plan for 2021 On Purpose

It’s the last week of the year and, in typical fashion, I’m taking some time to reflect and plan. As much as we’re all eager to give up 2020, I think we also are aware that the turn of the calendar doesn’t magically make it all better.

Like you, I have my questions for the future. If I learned anything from 2020 it’s that my carefully crafted strategic plans are not infallible. I can’t predict or control the future even though everything in me tries.

Where does that leave us when we’re on the brink of a new year? In a week that begs for some planning and preparation? How do we plan when things are unpredictable?

I honestly believe…
We still plan.
We still seek God.
We still set goals.
We still map out a vision.
And then we engage those plans with open hands, trusting God for continued direction and ultimately trusting him with the outcome.

Of course the reality of 2020 looked a lot different than what I had planned this time last year, but here’s the thing that didn’t change: my purpose. When my plans were upended, the one thing that didn’t change was my “why.”
Why do I do the work that I do?
That was the question I circled back to when I had to adjust my plans and respond to the unexpected.

I encourage you to prepare, plan and dream for 2021. But begin your planning with a strong understanding of your purpose. Your purpose is the anchor to guide you when things don’t go quite as planned.
